All computer users will be aware of the terms Intel Processors core i3, i5, i7, i9 and AMD Processors, etc. It is not just that the latest processor works better than the previous one, there are a lot more differences that you need to understand about them. When you are trying to purchase a new desktop or a laptop, and if you are not aware of how to choose the correct processor for your requirements, you may end up choosing the incorrect device.

During my research on processors, I went to a computer shop to purchase a new laptop and asked the guys over there about the differences between Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors. They were really not able to provide the correct information, instead ended up by saying the latest generation processor works better than the previous one.

Which is the best Intel processors i3, i5, i7 or i9? Which one to choose?

Later, I started researching more about it and gathered a lot of information about the processors, its generations and what are the differences in each generation. If you are a graphic designer or looking for a gaming computer, which processor to go with? I have made it very simple for you. After reading this article, you will be able to choose the processor you need by yourself.

What is a Processor?

A processor also called as Central Processing Unit (CPU) is a logical circuit that performs the operations on the computer. It performs arithmetic, logical, Input/output (I/O) and other instructions that are provided by the Operating System.

In other words, all the operations on the computer are controlled by the processor. Hence, it is also called as the heart of the computer.

Who manufacture the Processors?

Intel and AMD are the leading manufacturers of the processors for desktop and laptop computers. You may figure out more devices with the Intel Processors when compared to the AMD.

Intel, founded by Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore in the year 1968. Later, in the year 1969 Jerry Sanders founded AMD along with former employees of Fairchild Semiconductor.

What is a clock speed? How it is measured?

A clock speed measures the number of cycles, the Processor executing per second. You can consider Clock Speed is one of the key specifications of the Processor. The Processor or the CPU has the major impact on the speed at which the programs load and how smoothly they perform with multiple programs opened at a time.

These things can be measured by the Clock Speed of the Processor, and it can also be called as Clock Rate or Frequency. You can measure clock speed in Gigahertz (GHz) or Megahertz (MHz) (1 GHz=1000 MHz).

When you consider a CPU with 2.93 GHz Clock speed, it means the Processor performs the 2.93 billion cycles per second. The higher the clock speed, the faster the performance will be.

How to check the clock speed of an Intel Processor?

Checking the Clock speed of the Processor is quite simple. Refer to the below steps.

For Windows:

  1. Type System Information or msinfo32 in the Windows search bar. Select System Information.
  2. On this screen, you can see the Processor name, generation along with the Clock speed.

For Mac:

  1. Click on Apple icon on the top left side of the screen and select the option About this Mac.
  2. In the Processor section, you can see the clock speed.

Now, we are clear about the clock speed of the Processor. Let us learn the Cores of the Processor.

What are the Cores on the Processor?

Windows users are quite familiar with the word Core. When it comes to the Processors, very often we hear Core i3, Core i5, Core i7 and Core i9. But does anyone know what is the meaning of the Core and how many cores do a Processor have?

Let us go through in detail about that.

A Core is nothing but a part of the Processor that acts as a brain. It receives the instructions, performs the operations, calculations as instructed. A Processor or a CPU has multiple cores in it.

You can identify the number of cores in a processor by its name.

A Dual core processor has two cores in it.
Quad core consists of 4 cores.
Hexa Core consists 6 cores in it and
Octa Core consists of 8 cores in it.

The modern consumer CPUs come up with 2-12 cores. However, Workstation and the Servers come up with the cores up to 48.

There are multiple ways of operations performed by this core as per the instructions. Sometimes, each core of the CPU will be assigned to a work individually and in some cases, multiple cores may work together to perform a parallel operation in the Processor memory cache.

What are the uses of the multicore processors?

When you look at a single core processor, the performance of the Processor is limited by the time taken to communicate with the Random Access Memory (RAM) and cache. This is a slower process as the Processor actions will be awaiting the memory access results.

To overcome this issue and to boost up the processor performance, manufacturers are coming up with the multicore Processor.

Let us consider two processors with the same speed (clock speed). A multicore Processor of the same speed works better than the single core Processor of the same speed.

How to check the number of cores of a Processor?

After learning what the core means, now you may get a question, how can I check the number of cores of my processor? It is quite simple. Refer to the below steps.

There are 2 ways that you can easily check the number of cores of a Processor.

Check number of cores of a Processor on System Information:

You can check the number of cores of the Processor from the System Information.

  1. In the Windows search bar, type System Information or msinfo32 and click on System Information.
  2. You can see the Processor information on the same screen. First, you can see the Processor name and generation followed by the clock speed along with the number of cores and the number of logical processors.

Check number of cores of Processor from Task Manager:

  1. To access the Task Manager, you can press and hold the CTRL+Shift+Esc keys on your keyboard. Alternatively, you can also right-click on taskbar and select the option Task Manager.
  2. When the Task Manager window is open, click on the Performance tab to see the Processor information along with the Speed, Cores and the Logical Processors.

What is a Cache Memory?

Cache Memory also called as supplementary memory system. It stores the frequently used instructions and the data temporarily. So, when CPU wants to access these data, first it will check with the Cache memory, if the data is available in the Cache memory, it will be easily accessible.

In case, if the data is not stored in the Cache memory, then it will be redirected to the Random Access Memory.

This provides high speed data access to the processor and also called as the fastest memory in the computer. It is integrated on the motherboard and embedded with the Processor or the Random Access Memory (RAM).

Intel Processor generations list:

The first Intel Processor was Intel® 4004 Microprocessor. It was produced on a 2-inch wafer. The modern processors use 12-inch wafers. So, now you can understand how smaller the first Microprocessor was. This Processor is one of the smallest microprocessor designs that is produced for the commercial purpose.

Intel keeps on updating the processors and release the latest versions. The Processors that are currently in trending are Core i3, i5, i7 & i9. Here I will also list out the older Intel Processor generations along with the newer one.

Understanding Intel Processor naming conventions:

The processor name is a combination of multiple factors. If you have the knowledge about these, you can easily identify the Processor details like brand, generation, clock speed etc.

Consider Intel® Core™ i9-9900K Processor. Let us learn about what factors are included in it and how to identify them easily.

In the above processor,

Intel Core represents the Processor brand.

Here, the first thing that comes up is the brand name. When you look at the older version processors, the brand name will be listed as Intel Celeron, Intel Pentium and the latest one comes up with Intel Core. This Core generation processors are meant for their faster performance with additional feature that were not available in the older versions.

i9 represents Brand Modifier.

Followed by the brand name, the next thing you can see if the brand modifier. With this, you can identify the modifier. As you know, the latest Processor modifiers are i3, i5, i7 and i9. You can identify them easily. Older processors like Intel Celeron and Intel Pentium were not using this naming convention.

Next, you have the generation indicator.

After the brand modifier, you will have the generation indicator. Here you need to be a little smart to identify the Processor generation correctly. Suppose, if there are 5 numeric digits after the Brand Modifier, then the first 2 digits indicates the generation. In a 4-digit number, the first digit indicates the generation.

Consider 2 processors listed below.

Intel® Core™ i7-8086K

Intel® Core™ i9-11900KB

In the first Processor, there are 4 digits after the brand modifier. So, the first number indicates the generation. Now, it is clear that it is an 8th generation Processor.

When you look at the second Processor, there are 5 digits after the brand modifier. That means we need to take the first 2 digits as the generation indicator. So, it will be an 11th generation Processor.

You will get these 5 digits cases only from the 10th generation and above Processors.

SKU number.

You can see the SKU number followed by the generation indicator. SKU also called as Stock Keeping Unit number. It is a 3-digit number. These are assigned in serial to the Processor generations. This helps to keep the track Processors product line and further information.

If two different generation Processors have the same SKU number, it means the latest version has more additional features than that of the previous one. However, Intel says it is not recommended using the SKU number for comparison across different generations and product lines.

K represents Product line suffix.

The last thing in the Processor name is the product line suffix. This suffix in the name refers to the Processor capabilities. Each suffix has its respective functionality. You can see a Processor with same brand modifiers, generation and the SKU numbers, but with different suffix in it.

It means both Processors are manufactured for different functionalities with different capabilities.

Consider the below 2 Processors.

Intel® Core™ i9-11900K

As you can see, both the Processors look same except the suffix. What is the difference between these two Processors?

H suffix refers to the High Performance graphics. It represents the Intel’s high-end offerings in the mobile segment that consumes more power.

K suffix means the processor comes up with the highest performance with more clock speed as well. These are unlocked chips and can be overclocked. It means you can speed up the Processor by increasing the multiplier.

Product line suffix and its functionality:

Here I am listing all the suffixes that comes with the Processors and their functionality.

Suffix Code Functionality
No Suffix The processor with no suffix represents a standard desktop processor with four cores and high clock speed. It is useful for video and photo editing at high speed.
K It is the highest performance processor that you will ever find. These are similar to the processor with no suffix, however with the highest clock speed. These chips are unlocked and can be overclocked.
KF These are similar to the K but with the non-functional GPU’s. K CPUs have fully functional graphics.
H H refers to the high performance graphics and these are optimized for the mobile segment that consumes more power.
HK This is similar to H that refers high performance graphics and it is unlocked. That means it can be overclocked.
HQ HQ refers to the high performance graphics with Quad Core processor, and it is optimized for mobiles.
U U stands for ultra-low power, which is efficient for mobiles.
Y Y represents the extremely low power mobile efficient processor.
T/TE You can find these processors in smaller desktops and all-in-one PCs. These are similar to that with no suffix with the same number of cores, but have the lower clock speed.
P P indicates the desktop processor without the integrated graphics. Now in the later versions it includes the slower integrated GPU (Graphics Processing Unit).
G It contains the built-in high-end graphics processor. Most of the Intel Processors come with the built-in graphics used for the display. However, the Processors with G includes the Radeon RX Vega graphics built from AMD.
R This is a high-end mobile processor and is similar to H, which is optimized for mobile segment.
C An unlocked desktop processor similar to K. It has the highest performance with more clock speed, and also it can be overclocked.
X/XE This indicates the high end unlocked consumer CPU with most cores. This is pretty costly as well. They also refer as Extreme Edition.
E E refers to embedded. These can be utilized in the embedded systems.
F This processor requires discrete graphics.
B B refers to the Ball Grid Array (BGA). These are desktop tray processors, not the boxed processors.
L L refers to the large memory support. (up to 4.5 TB) whereas H supports up to 1.12 TB per socket
HL It is similar to the H processors, but includes the large memory support. (up to 4.5 TB)
UL It refers to the Ultra-low voltage CPU. The processor consumes very low power.
QM It means a Quad Mobile. It is a Quad core Processor made for the mobile platforms like laptop, notebook, Ultrabook etc.
G1-G7 These processors have the new integrated graphics technology.

Now, you have a clear idea about the Processors, generations, clock speed and the rest of the things those are discussed above. As per your requirement, you should be able to choose the correct Processor for yourself.
